Description

The Rosette Nebula (also known as Caldwell 49) is an H II region located near one end of a giant molecular cloud in the Monoceros region of the Milky Way Galaxy. The open cluster NGC 2244 (Caldwell 50) is closely associated with the nebulosity, the stars of the cluster having been formed from the nebula's matter.  The cluster and nebula lie at a distance of 5,000 light-years from Earth and measure roughly 130 light years in diameter.

In this narrowband Hubble Palette version (SHO) of NGC 2244 the H-alpha is mapped to green channel, SII is mapped to red channel and OIII is mapped to the blue channel. The raw data was pre-processed using PixInsight, the stars were removed using  StarXterminator and the stars were later replaced during post-processing in Photoshop CC with the more naturally colored stars from the RGB data.  Detail within the narrowband data was enhanced by utilising the H-alpha channel as a pseudo-luminance layer.
